Myovolt announced as official recovery partner of the Hurricanes Super Rugby team.

Myovolt is proud to announce a partnership with Super Rugby Pacific team, the Hurricanes.

Myovolt is the Hurricane’s official recovery technology partner this season and will be working alongside the strength and conditioning team to support their physiotherapy and rehab protocols. Myovolt will be used in warm-up and recovery sessions to help the S&C team get the most out of the players.

The Hurricanes are looking to impress in the 2022 Super Rugby season. The team is based in Wellington but due to Covid restrictions a 'bio-bubble' has been set-up in Queenstown for the first three weeks of the competition. It is expected that the teams will move back to their regional homes by mid March. New Zealand will also host teams like the newly formed Moana Pacifika - a team built from rugby union players from Pacific island nations like Samoa and Tonga.

The Hurricanes boast an impressive squad this year, brimming with high-level international and local talent. All Black and Hurricanes stalwart Ardie Savea will be returning as captain for 2022, fresh from the All Blacks northern hemisphere tour. His experience and leadership will be invaluable in the upcoming season, and he’s a star in his own right.

Also returning to the squad after a break from Super Rugby last year is the most capped player in Hurricane’s history, TJ Perenara. The 140-capped Hurricane’s veteran will bring major leadership in the backline for the Hurricanes, being the former captain of the squad. He’s also ninth in the all-time Super Rugby try-scoring list with 56 tries - an impressive statistic. Ruben Love is also looking strong for this year, showing massive potential.

On the wing, Jordie Barret is expected to continue his iron grip on the number 15 jersey. Julian Savea, an experienced player and ex-All Black will be partnered up with Wes Goosen, an incredibly talented player in his own right. The Hurricanes are going to be the team to watch, with blitzing speed, agility and scoring potential.

Their forward pack is looking imposing too, with some fantastic young talent like All Black Tyrel Lomax expected to make a big showing. James Blackwell, who has a work ethic to be admired, should end up in the Hurricanes 50 squad, reserved for players who have chalked-up for 50 games for the Hurricanes squad since it was established in 1996.

“For us the key is consistency, keeping the players healthy and on the park has a big impact on performance and those 1 percenters are what matters.”

LeeVan Santos, Head Physio, Hurricanes

It’s a high level squad, for a very difficult game.

Rugby at a professional level is an extreme sport. Athletes typically run an average distance of seven kilometres per game, alternating between light jogs and sprinting at a moment’s notice. It’s also a high collision sport with tackling being a major part of the game. For this reason, strength and conditioning is critical in rugby training. Athletes are expected to crash into each other, dragging the ball handler to the ground - no small task considering the average size of a rugby player is around 100 kilograms.

Injuries can happen at a moment’s notice on the rugby field given the high intensity environment. High collisions with big bodies can spell certain danger if training and recovery aren’t dialled in. Myovolt will be used in all areas of the Hurricanes training, including pre-game routines as well as recovery and rehab sessions. The hands-free and specialised design of Myovolt means that they’re able to use it on the go. Whether in the hotel, on the bus to and from games, Myovolt is specifically designed to give players and athletes a convenient recovery tool they can use in their downtime away from the pitch.

Hurricanes Head Physiotherapist, LeeVan Santos, says the most important thing is getting the most out of their players.

“For us the key is consistency, keeping the players healthy and on the park has a big impact on performance and those 1 percenters are what matters.”

Santos says Myovolt’s track record speaks for itself and the technology has been excellent to implement.

“Myovolt has been working with a number of high performance athletes and Olympic teams, designing technology to increase power, speed and performance."

"We use Myovolt to warm the muscles up pre-training and then as a key part of our recovery. The players can relax in our recovery room and let the technology do it's thing."

Myovolt has been pioneered by World leading experts in wearable electronics technology. Founders Steve Leftly and Dianne Jones have more than twenty year's experience in developing and commercialising garment integrated electronics, working with some of the largest global brands including Adidas, Apple, Levis, Decathlon, Nike, Burton, O’Neill, BMW and NASA.

In 2012 they created the World’s first performance enhancing electronic garments for elite athletes. Developed for Adidas, this technology was specifically designed to enhance off-the-mark muscle power performance for explosive sports such as track cycling and athletics.

Clinically tested at Loughborough University, UK to give 9% muscle power performance gains, these cutting edge garments were used successfully in competition by Olympic teams in the UK, Australia, Canada, USA and New Zealand.

Over the last ten years, enhancing human performance and recovery through wearable technology has been the driving force behind the extensive R&D effort that led to Myovolt, it's invention, validation and commercialisation.

Central to this was the goal to create a wearable treatment product that could enhance sports performance for everyone, not just elite athletes. Myovolt is soft, comfortable and easy to use delivering a specific range of vibration frequencies to massage and stretch muscle fibres and stimulate nerves. It’s clinically proven to increase blood flow, reduce delayed onset muscle soreness and increase flexibility.

We learn so much working closely with elite players, performance experts and physios to optimise the use of our products”

The opportunity to work with high level teams like the Hurricanes is something that Myovolt Co-Founder Steve Leftly is thrilled about.

“We’re really excited to be partnering with the Hurricanes this season.
We learn so much working closely with elite players, performance experts and physios to optimise the use of our products. With this year’s unique travel and movement restrictions, Myovolt will provide the Hurricanes with physio-level recovery anywhere, anytime.”

Santos agrees that the hands-on approach works well for the squad too.

“The team from Myovolt have been amazing in their time with us so far, understanding our needs, talking to the players and developing ways
to create cutting edge wearable technology that best suit our unique needs.”

“We couldn’t ask for a better partnership.”

But the men's team is only half the story, Myovolt is excited to be helping the women's team - the Hurricanes Poua - in their Super Rugby Aupiki campaign. The first of its kind - it’s a round-table tournament and a landmark for women's rugby in New Zealand. Women’s rugby has seen an incredible uptake in recent years, and the inaugural tournament is expected to make a big splash in the rugby world, and women's sport in general.

The Hurricanes have a great showing for their first game of the season on 19th February, looking to tackle the Crusaders in a grudge match. They’re no stranger to beating the Christchurch team, as the Hurricanes were the ones to snap the Crusaders 36-game winning streak in 2020.

Myovolt will be following the progress of both the men's and women's teams this season and we are sure the technology will be a welcome addition to the Hurricanes squad in 2022.

Myovolt. Good Vibrations. Great Recovery.
